Think of it this way. Capital P "Pokemon" means each Pokemon that has its own Pokedex entry: Wormadam is a Pokemon. Lowercase p "pokemon" is each individual Pokemon and its formes: Wormadam-Grass is a pokemon, Wormadam-Sand is a pokemon, and Wormadam-Trash is a pokemon.
In Gen VI, 72 new Pokemon and 48 Mega Evolutions were added, so that means 120 pokemon were added.
If you don't like that they're being counted in this scenario, we can add in the number of formes in other generations. The numbers won't change that much (except for Gen II with all the Unown formes), but it gives you a more accurate idea of how many pokemon (that's a lowercase p) were added each time.
It makes much more sense to look at it this way since 1) Gen VI was the first to introduce so many formes for old Pokemon, and 2) it brings the number of Gen VI pokemon up closer to the average. Do you really think GF wasn't looking at it this way?
We're probably getting a Gen 3 amount of Pokémon.
