I think the curiosity makes it better. Like compare a game like Ruby and Sapphire, where the Champion isn't immediately apparent (it's not unreasonable that you could figure it out but Steven only appears a couple time in the game and his sprite isn't that flashy so it's possible he's just a recurring NPC like Eusine, never really going anywhere) to something like XY where you know Diantha is going to be the Champion the moment you see her design. The former is more interesting because there's a chance it subverts your expectations.

In game trainers don't have evs/stat exp so that's how its meant to be balanced. The real fight against Red in gen 2 was in Pokemon Stadium 2 round 2. Never played Stadium 2 myself but I'm told the Round 2 RNG is the worst in the series.

I was 10 years old, I freaked the fuck out. If I put the music on now and think about that moment I still get chills. Fighting my old character blew my mind. Fighting Red was something that nobody even thought of as a possibility back then. Keeping that final battle a secret made it one of the best moments in gaming history. Perfect game design.
The original Champion Lance/Red theme is the best battle theme in the series. The HG/SS remake version sucks in comparison. The 8-bit music made it sound so much more intense, especially the first 10 seconds.

The switch from 8-bit to more grand/orchestra/symphony/whatever obviously had to happen in the series, but the music in the newer games doesn't do it for me at all. It's mostly not memorable or catchy and none of the "epic battle" themes sound nearly as epic as they should. I just love the simple harshness of 8-bit music.

It's true. Fighting Red was very clearly designed to be the end of the Pokemon story. But then they realized that Pokemon prints money and they'd be leaving billions on the table if they ended it there. Can't blame them, but the games that followed had a different feel to them, beyond the jump from GBC to GBA.
Being able to go to Kanto in GSC made every game that followed feel underwhelming in comparison. Just the fact that the story was a direct continuation of gen 1's story was so cool.

I loved how you could complete RBY in many different ways because you could choose your path. I don't know if it's lazy devs or the great designers left, but since RSE they decided a straight path was the way to go. I liked Black because it almost felt like a full reboot thanks to the all new Pokemons, but it lacked the sense of discovery from Kanto and Johto.

I feel the same, but ORAS Regis were a snoozefest. The games should have included a Braille chart like Gen 3 and actually made the puzzles more, you know, puzzling. All four of them were super-easy.
As much as they were inaccessible for half the world, I also loved the special event islands for Deoxys, Ho-oh/Lugia and Mew. They had puzzles to them too. There was more to it than just catching the Pokemon or being given eh Pokemon. You actually had to seek them out. And not like in ORAS where you basically go on a legendary hunt and they all just pop up every two seconds with the most minimal of puzzle-solving being needed.

In this order, including pic related, these images tell the story of my first encounter. I actually tried to run away from the battle when I started losing because I was so under leveled for Mt. Silver that I had been running away from the wild pokemon my starter couldn't defeat and it had become a habit. My only decently leveled pokemon at the time were my Typhlosion, who was stupidly high level, and my Kingler, who was maybe in the high 60's. The rest of my team was even more shit and were all in their late 40's to early 50's. I beat his Pikachu and Espeon with Typhlosion (barely) and defeated his Blastoise with Kingler after Typhlosion weakened it. Then Snorlax appeared and swept my entire team.
I spent weeks (I didn't get to play the game too often due to my parents only allowing a certain amount of video game time each day) training and rebuilding my team to handle this fight. I got so completely and utterly schooled by Red that I became obsessed until just a few years ago with type autism. I had to have as many different types in my party as possible in every game until like 2011.
Some of my favorite pokemon to this day are the bros I made training for that fight: crobat, ampharos, graveler, and snorlax.

If you haven't noticed, you only need Gen 6 games to complete the pokedex, minus event mythics. This is a good thing, even if you just line up to pick up legendaries in a remake.
They're trying to make it so that you don't have to rely on the jumping-through-hoops with older games in order to complete the Pokedex.
