Anorith is my favorite Bug-type. I love Lilleep, but there's no contest for me.
It's the closest Fossil choice they've had, though.

Cradily is fairly useful late game, especially if you teach it good TMs. But it sucks badly to train it earlier in the game indeed. Horrid level-up movepool, no offensive power and erratic experience group makes leveling up very hard at lower levels.

The fact Typhlosion's stats are exactly the same as Charizard's makes using it not an option to my autism. I also don't like water starters since there are always plenty of interesting water pokemon options throughout any pokemon game, so I always picked chikorita in the second gen.

A egg-bred cradily with storm drain is on my Rock Gym team. In Doubles, you either kill it first, or nothing kills it. Giga drain / rock slide / toxic / recover. Cary leftovers, partner with shuckle.

I actually did try a water monotype once. I ended up boxing Croconaw for Gyarados. I never did complete that run though, but Croconaw's always just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Boxing a Pokemon because it's middle design isn't your thing is kind of retarded, especially since it spends even less time in that stage than its prior and post stages.
Gyarados is only a marginal replacement for Feraligatr, and ultimately its up to playstyle (Feraligatr isn't as completely fucked over by Water and Ice being Special in Gen II).

I don't hate Feraligatr, but i'd never use it on my team again, i did that my first ever playthrough. Besides, Fire's a far rarer type in Johto than Water.
