In Niantic's other game, Ingress, the game revolved around going to portals and hacking for items (like pokestops) and taking them over for your team (like gyms).
They just used the portals for these locations in Pokemon Go. Having a familiartiy with Ingress is helping in this game.

You have to level up the gym to add more slots. To level it up you defeat the current pokemon there with your own. They call it training. Once it has leveled up there will appear an icon that let's you assign a pokemon to it.

No, you can't lock the phone. It has to be open and the have the app open on the screen.
If your phone has no gyroscope then the power saver won't work. It's kind of useless anyway unless you have an OLED screen where it actually turns off the pixels.

Evolve, max CP is based on your trainer level so any boosting you do will be moot down the line but evolving gives a big CP boost and you can just boost your fully evolved mons as needed

I can't see them banning people for wanting to play the game early.
It's not like it's stealing since the app is free and it's not like you're cheating either. They're probably annoyed that their servers are getting rammed from people all trying to play it at once but it just seems stupid to me that they would think "Aaaah fuck you for being excited to play our game, here's a ban!"
One way to look at it is the people downloading it early are probably the biggest fans and I don't think they want to piss off thousands of potential microtransaction customers by banning them.
So this is my exploitable pokestop loop I've been running since about 8 am. It's like playing WoW and running a mining loop IRL. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact I'm a loser.
