Seeing as it was the first game to remove meaningful content and replace it with gimmicks.
As a whole it represented a lower quality game, that was until gens 3 and 5 rolled along and improved the QoL of the game as well as adding new content beyond the regular battles.
Gens 2 and 4 were all about the gimmicks and how they could force them down the throats of the player.

Both game modes change the way you battle and gives certain moves relevance, if you had said the wonder launcher you would have had a point.
In any case take a look at things like the Pokeathlon, following pokemon, decorating the safari zone and so on. They're as gimmicky as you can get and they were added for the exact reason you're saying triples and rotations were.

I wasn't aware that these fall under gimmicks. Certainly they're more useless than the Poketch and Phone that did fuck all.
