The difference is that Ash told Charmeleon to job to a Paras as soon as it evolved, then ignored it in favor of his NFE shitmons because it was too battle-obsessed for him, while Alan let his Charizard fight all it wanted because he knew it's the greatest Pokemon there is. Ash-Greninja is the result of Ash finally telling the unevolving mascot rat to fuck off and treating his starter right, which is why he'll reach the finals this time around. He got close in DP, but there, he fucked up by ditching his true starter in favor of his rival's used goods just because it dared to evolve.
