Personally wouldn't say she's the best thing.
Either length of hair is fine by me, although long hair wins by a thread (long hair is a fetish of mine). It is actually quite refreshing to see a change in character appearance through a series.
and one more thing, I absolutely hate the style and tone that her English voice actor has given her. It is so plain and uninspired. I understand new voice actors are a good thing but make sure they are good.
