For some reason shit like this is the only thing that makes me cringe on /vp/. It's the reason I avoid fakemon threads, although the circlejerk attitudes obviously also cause more tangible issues (any criticism that calls something out for being bad is immediately considered to be trolling, no calling out poor critiques without being labeled a douchebag with no taste, etc). I'm generally a pretty nice guy on here; I give compliments where compliments are due and never shitpost or anything, but I think that's pretty distinct from trying to crop up what ultimately amount to circlejerks. Maybe it's because I see an unearned compliment or even unearned kindness as harmful to the person it's being given to's growth or some shit? I dunno.

Again, it's because I think it's nonconstructive. I'm the kind of person who's harsh when critiquing other's performance, specifically if I think they have potential. It's not that I'm saying kindness needs to be earned in general outside of that. And fakemon threads, or rather Drawthreads in general, are very circlejerk-esque. You can tell because the attitudes therein are very unlike those of 4chan at large, regardless of the board they crop up on; People will never say something is shit, even if it's easy to tell that the "critic" themself thinks it's awful and looks down on the artist, which is how a lot of "artists" I knew never ended up getting better. That being said, it's not that I think gentle critiques are somehow inherently bad, it just doesn't sit well with me, personally. This is a thread about cringe, which is an emotion, not a deduction, and so regardless of how much I know it's just the alternative rather than an outright evil, it won't stop my natural, gut reaction from occurring.

Does anyone remember that contest Nintendo held around the release of Ruby and Sapphire where people were to send in Pokemon-related home videos? I remember the winner being this really cringy home video with two grown up guys jumping around their living room while singing made up lyrics to the melody of the Pokemon theme.
