They did it on purpose. It's the same thing they did with Ruby and Sapphire and Diamond and Pearl, and to a lesser extent even Black and White. They take away features so they can add them back later on so that the next games feel new and innovative. This way you'll be happy whenever they bring back a feature you enjoyed, otherwise you'd take it for granted.
Just because they aren't doing third versions anymore it doesn't mean they're not following the same strategy.

Comparing it to Kalos Route 1 isn't fair, though it'd be ok if you compared it to Route 2. Also please take not that the extra part of Unova Route 1 can only be accessed later on, it could have easily been part of the next Route instead of 1, though it's nice that they did it this way, I enjoyed finding the extra part. If you compare the main part of Unova Route 1 to Kalos Route 2 it isn't that different. Kalos Route 1 doesn't count because it's more of a continuation of the two cities. It counts as a Route, but it isn't really a Route by itself.
