1. First and foremost, Birdspam can absolutely annihilate it in battle.
2. It's colour scheme is rather off-putting, despite being meant to represent a ripened chestnut.

The Japanese fanbase was promised an event Pokemon coming from said poll, which encouraged most of the participants to vote for legendaries, Pikachu or other extremely overhyped pokemon like Greninja or Charizard. Some even tried to get Magikarp or Magnemite to the top as a joke because a distribution of whoever reached 1st place was going to take place.
Even if it was an unbiased poll, it wouldn't prove shit because the Japanese fanbase doesn't represent the opinions of the entire world. Simisear tied on last place with several other pokemon, it's just that the RNG gave it bad luck.

It just needed some polish. The idea isn't bad it just didn't turn out great. The arms and legs need more definition, the mantle-thing is a little weird, the color palette is kind of random from the previous stages, etc. All little things that just come together wrong.
Biggest problem I have is no ears, though.

neutral to bird spam, STAB Stone Edge, earthquake is all the coverage he needs, and shit like Hammer Arm would still be reasonable to learn though it would probably be too weak to use.

EXACTLY! It's supposed to be a "blast shield" type of pokemon by putting it's arms in front of its face and allowing it to absorb ddifferent types of explosions. But when it does it still has all of this empty space exposed? Spiky shield itslef look absolutely autistic from a design standpoint. Also it's arms and legs are disproportionate to its body, and the color scheme is atrocious. (Although the shiny does fix this problem). That being said I think all the Kalos starters final evolution s are quite unappealing. delphox's ear hair is repulsive and the tounge scarf on Greninja is off-putting as well.
