No gyms now. Each island has distinct main quest and side quests and a final battle against an Island Guardian who fights alongside an elite/specialized trainer (Tapu Koko fights alongside Hala, for example).
Elite 4 is Fairy, Dark, Steel, Dragon. Champion is a big Hawaiian guy with Pokemon tattoos (he has a Muk on his arm for example and one of his new Pokemon is Shipprect, a Ghost/Water Pokemon that is basically a haunted boat. Imagine Lapras/Drampa body shape, but ghostly and boat
