I hate Unova. I literally cannot finish my White playthrough because of the map. Everything about is so bland and unappealing. It feels like one of those forced middle school trips to the most boring locations for educational purposes.

Sorry you haven't received an actual rebuttal to your opinion, OP. Here, let me help.
Unova sacrifices the more open level design of, say, Gen IV for linearity. This is solely to streamline the story/augment the tension. On the one hand, yeah, I obviously miss Gen IV's unrestrained adventure. On the other, BW's story would never be as good as it is without this level design. There's just something so thematically satisfying about progressing to the literal 'top' of a region, and then having that regional top get crowned by the evil villain's floating fortress that gives Team Plasma a presence no other team has enjoyed in the series.
I also agree though that the towns are all pretty bland. Nimbasa, Icirrus, etc, they colors are unappealing and there's nothing about them that really draws you in.
I think BW2 fixes this aspect of Unova though, adding a sheen of polish to the region.

I'm playing through Platinum right now (just arrived at Hearthome) and I've got to say that it's one of the least fun maps I've experienced in Pokemon. Wayward Cave would have been fun were it not for the absence of Gen V's Repel mechanics. But when you get to Hearthome City, there are two equally bullshit roadblocks preventing you from progressing further. That's way worse than anything encountered in Gen V.
The routes have all looked bland as fuck and same-ish, too, unlike anything in Gen V. Throw in the "caves everywhere" meme and traversing Sinnoh is actually proving to be massively unfun.
