I don't think being story focused is the reason they give out legendaries though.
And if they really needed the protagonist to have a legendary in their team, they could easily just make it temporary and let you catch them during post game after the story is over.

Yeah but the freebies aren't really a cause of them trying to make the games more story focused. It seemed more like an excuse to give them away rather than giving them away for the story.
I'm not really into other JRPGs. But the story in BW really added a nice flavour to it.

I fucking hate pretty much all non monster raising JRPG's. Having JRPG storylines is retarded. First two gens had the best stories because they were basically about personal development and growth, without any save the world shit. I would love for a Pokemon game to return to those basic concepts.

Nope. A good story makes you want to explore the world more. It makes the world feel more alive. It makes battles have meaning to them.
Of course, you wouldn't know if you haven't played any decent JRPG outside of the pokemon franchise.

Key word is 'more'. It all adds to the experience. But it's obvious that you can't see how it does since again, you clearly haven't touched a decent JRPG outside of pokemon.
A central big epic plot like BW1 tried to have I don't want. Keep that out, have a more subdued character driven story with your rivals and your own personal adventure. A lot more world building and underlying lore to piece together throughout the areas of world I want as well.

I'll give you the free Lucario and Lati@s, those were retarded. But those weren't really there because it was story focused but more because the story aspect was handled poorly.
I think it's also worth mentioning that the second least story focused games in the franchise allowed you to potentially go into the fourth gym with three legends in your party.
