Gen 1 may have opened started the franchise and given people the first taste of what pokemon were like, but that doesn't mean it set a bar for what pokemon have to look like.
With time comes change, and with 20 or so years under their belt you cannot expect pokemon who were created back in 1996 to look like pokemon who are created in 2016.
Gen 1 does have incredible pokemon in it and I would be lying if I said I didnt enjoy a lot of the old fashion Sugimori art, but pokemon doesn't have tight rules or guidelines to what a pokemon can and cant be. Obviously they try to stay away from being too realistic, hell the slow shift in pokemon designs that started in gen 3 may be because they felt more cartoonish designs would give them a stronger identity rather then be real life animals with angry eyes (see Fearow and Raticate, which i love)
And no, im not saying you have to like every change, but if you cant for the life of you, come to enjoy anything the new pokemon games offer, then you either need to find your way out and stop playing the games or open yourself up to new designs.
Bruxish and Drampa are certainly odd looking pokemon, but for me thats why I enjoy them. Not all pokemon are made to strike a cord with every person and its that ability to create designs for everyone that makes pokemon such a successful franchise. If GF looked at charizards or greninja's popularity and decided to only make designs that attempted to grab those fans, the game would be stale and boring. Thats why change and diversity are so important, and as much as people complain about those subjects of pokemon, its the very essence that makes pokemon so enjoyable.
So if you really hate all of gen 5 or 6 or whatever, fine. Thats fair, you get to like and dislike whatever you want. However your opinion is not universal. But if your really the kind of person who wont enjoy something that doesnt completely tailor to your every whim, you'll never be happy.

It's not really out of line with older pokemon designs. If anything, Tapukoko and Magearna are the most unpokemon like - like a lot of gen 6 pokemon - but I actually quite like Tapukoko.

And I would tend to agree with you about Tapukoko and Magearna, though both have slowly grown on me. I fid Tapukoko looks kind of like Gallade's long lost twin and Magerna feels a bit cluttered.
