The more I think about it, the more I like the thought of Synchro evolutions being like Dragon Ascent was to Rayquaza's Mega.
New forms made when the Pokemon knows a specific move(and the player has the synchro evolution item). Greninja can only synchro evolve when it knows Water Shuriken, and it buffs Water Shuriken into a much stronger attack because of how much its design is based on it.
Expand that to other Pokemon to give shitty moves some usability. Donphan's Synchro is with Rollout. Electrode's is with Selfdestruct. Maybe something like Bonemerang on Marowak. Attack Order on Vespiquen. Roar of Time on Dialga.

I haven't watched every moment the transformation happens yet, but it seems to primarily be activated by Greninja being smacked around. Even in the webm there, it got hit before it transformed. Not much, but earlier ones had Greninja being beaten up a bit more before the form change happened.
Given that we've also recently learned this is how Zygarde transforms in game, I've been wondering if there's a connection. Of course, it might just be typical shonen transformation shit, which tends to happen under stress and damage to seem cooler.

I think syncro would probably more like zygarde ability. If your pkmn is in a pinch it can syncro evolve. My only basis is the anime where ash-greninja apparently hast to take a hit before it can syncro. Even in the last match it took the dragon pulse from altaria while not even trying to dodge it, it had no sense other than the syncro needing it.
