Think about it, absolutely everyone in Johto carries around a Pokegear. This thing acts as a cell phone and has applications you can install (not many and it's done via cards, but hey, this was 1999).
When else has Pokemon predicted the future?

Um, no it wouldn't be. It doesn't matter what country they came from. The fact of the matter is that plenty of other stories predicted the rise, and indeed the existence, of smartphones before Pokemon ever did, and there of those that were plenty that were released in Japan anyway.
