Cause 5 moves benefit everyone, but if the 5th slot is free reign, some pokemon will become completely broken. If gamefreak knows how to balance (which they dont) they'll make stronger pokemon have a limited set, while shitmons have a much wider selection.

A 5th move would break the game balance. 4 moves perfectly limits the game enough where you have to sacrifice something but can still be very effective with the 4 choices you have.

AND

I can wall, stall, play aggressive, and wish pass. With 4 moves I couldn't do all of those options since I would usually have to drop protect or run foul play over curse and payback to fit protect in. Sweepers would have even more coverage or a free spot for boost moves without sacrificing any coverage. VGC everything would run protect without sacrificing anything they currently use.

Defensive cores become even more selective because instead of having to defend against the 3-4 common moves you have to cover 4-5 moves. But I'm sure your stealth rocks or Aromatherapy will help a lot with that.
