The biggest offence was that they removed about ten minutes of footage from the beginning of the movie concerning a character named "Ai" and Mewtwo's interaction with her.
Dialog was altered for whatever reason. The best example is during Mewtwo's awakening when he asks if Mew is one of his parents rather then wanting to fight him right out.
The message at the end is distorted from "All life is equal" to "Don't fight". rather strange for a world like Pokemon.
the rest is typical 4kids; changing names, musical score, toning dune themes and violence.
I do encourage anyone to find the original Toho release with subtitles and draw their own conclusion.

The only reason I think the jap version was any better was the removal of the Amber story in many english versions. Later versions got that back, so...
And that awful song that plays during the clone brawl scene, but the song, while awful, does work there.
And that is totally my judgement on it. It is a decent movie in its own right, but it is a fucking amazing pokemon movie, or movie associated with an anime series in general.

Did anybody actually own this back in the day? I remember seeing it at the store and just shitting my pants. I nagged my parents for it and they caved, got home and popped that sucker into my walkman, only to be sorely dissapointed. I thought, "what the hell are these songs and why are they in here".
Of course, I now realise that most of those non-Pokemon tracks had been desperately crammed into the credits and that's what had given them an excuse to put them in the soundtrack. But at the time I didn't even recognize them (save for We're a Miracle by Christina Aguilara, that made a huge impression on me, I guess since it was the first(?) song that played in the credits.)
Fast forward to today, though, I fucking love it and listen to it frequently because nostalgia, goddammit.

I begged my parents to buy me the soundtrack when I was a kid. I was really disappointed when I popped it in the CD player and found out it was just random pop songs instead of actual Pokemon music. Still played the shit out of it though.
I remember searching everywhere for a vhs of the movie just because I wanted the Mewtwo card so badly. Could never get it, but the ones from the second and third movie were a nice consolation.
Maybe I could buy it online one of these days, for nostalgia's sake.

there are at least 2 variants of this card (the other being the WB stamped one), but both function the exact same. you use energy absorption to power up and psyburn to dominate.
tech-in with the Alakazam/Chansey damage swap deck skeleton, and you've got yourself a solid tank of a Mewtwo.
