Is Charmeleon a char custom?

why is charmeleon redish orange and then charizard goes back to charmander's tone of orange? shoulnd't charizard be totally red or at least as red as charmeleon?

I like Charmeleon better than Charmander or Charizard specifically because it feels different. It doesn't fall into the trap of "just getting bigger" like some of evolutions seem to do.
