Squirtle because i loved wartortle. Never evolved him to blastoise.
Bulbasaur
Because it was pretty cool in the anime
Charmander because I didn't understand how to read heights in feet/inches and believed it was some kind of higher stat.
I had Yellow, but when the time came for FR/LG, I picked Bulba purely because there were no other Grass types I liked. Venusaur quickly became one of my top pokemon, if not THE top.

Charmander because Charizard was on the box and Charmander is the first pokemon you see at the start screen for Red
Charmander because he looked cool and I just liked him overall more than the other two. On my second play through I chose Squirtle.
Squirtle because my favorite color was blue and turtles were my favorite animals.
Blastoise still my ace and I use it in my VGC team and whenever it's allowed on the PGL online competitions

Charmander because dinosaur. Was pleasantly surprised when it became a dragon as well. All 3 are great though. They and Hoenn are tied for best starter trio.
Squirtle and it was the first Pokemon i ever trained to level 100
Bulbasaur. The idea of using poision, paralysis and sleep seemed fun.
Charmander
I don't really remember why. Probably because it was fire types and it evolved into a dragon. I'm pretty sure I saw the anime before I got Red Version.
All the Gen 1 starters are top-tier, though.

I bought a leafgreen cart once but the savefile was corrupt, I tried to pick Squirtle on that. I picked Bulba on Y and Squirt on X. My first actual starter was Chimchar.

Bulbasaur because I knew it would be good against the first two gyms. I played Crystal first, so I already had an idea of how pokemon worked, and who the first two gym leaders were.

Charmander because it was the first ball I clicked on. At that time I was of the belief that if you played Red you had to pick Charmander, so I assumed that all 3 balls had Charmander in them.

Blaziken was ok but I didn't like those two big locks of fur (feathers?) on either side of its head.
Infernape had too much of a donkey mouth. I liked Chimchar though.
Emboar just plain had an awful face. The body was cool, but the whole mouth fused with neck aspect was just so ugly.
Top that off with all of them being Fire/Fighting instead of something unique.
Blaziken could've stayed Fighting. Infernape should've been Dark. Emboar could've been Steel and had more robust features to add to its weight.
Charmander.
My favorite is Bulbasaur now though.

The monkey king is a sneaky trickster who even has a grudge against Buddha. Plus Chimchar gets a set of Dark status moves early on via level-up like Taunt and Torment, and gets Nasty Plot later on. If we were to apply Popplio's presumed Fairy type conclusion with the Disarming Voice reveal to Chimchar, Chimchar would end up as Dark.
Charmander. A fire type and a "dragon" is awesome for kids.

for some reason i hate primeape, so i didn't use mankey much.
most times i ditched butterfree, mankey or nidoran by the time i reached cerulean city.

I don't remember what I did originally against Brock. Later on, I would just catch a Mankey and destroy him with it. I never thought to use a Nido. I love Nido, it's like the unofficial Poison starter.

I chose Squirtle, because I had Blue version and like turtles. But I traded with a friend and had all 3 starters from the get-go.
Grew to favor Charmander, though. Went Charmander in Fire Red and X. Mega Charizard X is my ace.
I think all the hate he gets here is pretty ridiculous.

I agree, Mega Charizard X is one of my favorite designs. I don't think the 3D model does him justice, but the official design is great.
Chose Charmander because the first exposure to Pokemon I had was the 2-player starter deck from the TCG, which had Charmander.

I picked Bulbasaur because it's my favorite. I don't know how to explain it. He has always been my favorite. In the anime his vine whip always saved people from danger. Between the three it's not even a question for me. He's not just my favorite of the three, he is my favorite pokemon. I guess it's all in the design and his portrayal in the anime.
