The difference with XY was none of them had any character development. No goals or anything. Trevor almost had something with completing the Dex but he was rigged to lose to you every time. Probably as to not upset children, which in reality, no kid would give a fuck if that little coconut head shit had more Pokemon.
BW did it right. Each of the three had clear goals and development. Bianca was being a trainer in secret from her dad, and grew to prove her dad she could be one. Cheren was a real rival, battling you a lot and growing stronger. N wanted to liberate Pokemon but learned from you that humans and Pokemon could live in harmony.
