Then I hope you are not watching XY, because Greninja is ten times worse.
It's true that Infernape had the spotlight in the battles against Paul, but it's natural due to all that backstory it had with Paul himself.
Infernape did, however, not take any spotlight in the other fights, at least as far as the league is concerned. It did not participate vs Nando, Conway or Tobias and as a result Heracross, Noctowl, Gible, Pikachu and so on got to kick some ass and get big wins.
Compare that to Greninja who is taking the spotlight in ALL league battles, not to mention the 8th gym, vs Diantha, vs Alan/Shota in XYZ 13, 23, 26. In other words, there's not really any space for the rest of Ash's team to show off their battle prowess.

They tried to do what they did in the Original Series and have ash travel with a bunch of cute starters then rotate stronger Pokemon which he'd use for gym battles, tournaments etc.
It didn't work and many of his Pokemon outside the starters, Scraggy and Krookodile (which was a recurring character long before Ash caught it anyway) never got any real personality and were basically emotionless battle drones. They also brought back Charizard for some fucking reason, I don't really know, after the league.

I think the problem with Torterra was its nature itself. Remember that as a Turtwig it was a speedy son of a bitch. And when it started evolving it couldn't keep that fighting style because of its weight. Later it found rock climb as an impractical way to go fast, but because of that it was open to receive more damage like in the fight against Drapion.
Ash's Torterra is not meant to be a wall like snorlax or goodra, but as a Torterra itself is not meant to be a sweeper either. And that's sad.
