Every single game since B/W has launched with a Level 10 "starter" Event. Probably to encourage people to buy the games at launch, for the exclusive Pokémon. The Events end just after Christmas, unsurprisingly.
B/W = Victini
B2/W2 = Genesect

OR/AS = Shiny Metang
They always come at low levels so kids don't ruin their first experience of the game (although they sure as hell would make the games easier, I guess)

IMO the mesh of environments didn't work well. They tried to cram too much in. You have a swamp really close to a desert, and then a route inexplicably set in blizzard, which isn't even connected to the Ice Gym.
However the first half of the Region was gorgeous. Basically, everything up to Laverre City was perfect (excluding the Desert), then the game shits the bed.
Still honestly one of my favorite Regions though.

Dawn had really dark hair in some older art, but is pretty much universally drawn with blue hair, and her in-game sprite seems clearly blue-haired.

True, but if I could play devils advocate, S/M are the first Pokémon games with an extra year of development, since Platinum. It broke the annual release pattern, which means they had more time to develop content.
