imo it's more tedious
you're sent all over the map to revisit old locations (including the Team Hideout in Lilycove, restocked with trainers) and it eventually lends you at the Sky Pillar which they completely fucking changed because 'muh exposition'
Then there's the last time you can save, followed by catching Rayquayquay, fighting Zinnia and fighting another 'Mon.
Only then can you save again. A++ design.
