You guys should really both familiarize yourself with actual deserts, and also understand that if tropical regions have deserts, than desert regions can have other things.
The Mojave Desert is a good example. There's actually quite a wide variety of areas, from Lake Mead and the Colorado River, to the snow-capped Mt. Charleston. Plus, of course, Vegas.
