I feel like it was a convoluted mess honestly. As a Unovabro/abortion I enjoy Pokemon games having an immerisve story.
XY was barebones in the story, but in a weird way. It felt like I was playing versions where the story is very simplisting like FRLG, but at the same time there were times when it attempted to be complex like Pt or BW/B2W2.
However the "complex" moments fell flat because unlike in previous games, there was almost no buildup to new characters and no development to the already established ones.
This sounded pretty stupid, did I make any sense?

I don't like superfluous "features" like contests and megas that add nothing to the game. The more of these wasteful features you add the further you get away from the core of what pokemon is. I want to play pokemon, not barbie or digimon.
I understand that most people want pokemon to have every single feature and hundreds of new pokemon. I'm just not one of them. I ignore most of these features and concentrate on what I enjoy but they are a huge resource drain that could be spent on better designs and polishing the game.
TLDR: I want a polished quality game. I don't want a smorgasbord of crappy content.
