Do they make that much of a difference? In the tcg I'm more annoyed by the regular EX pokemon, opponents using a mega evolution can be more of a burden for them under the right circumstances.

I have a feeling they'll just re-label Mega Pokemon into "Synchro-Evolutions", or make Mega stones work with the bracelet the protagonist have anyways.
After a generation of focusing on them, it's a terrible move just to retcon them a year later.
