In newer gens the first stages tend to be a bit more cute with bigger heads and eyes, but the last stages still have have everything "right" related to proportions.
Just look at chesnaught and chespin, chespin has a big round head and eyes, while chesnaught has normal proportions AND triangle eyes.

I played Gen 2 first then bugged my parents for Red like a month later. I was like 7 when I got a GBC and Gold for Christmas. They made me save up my allowance and buy Red myself and boy did that feel good. Then in 2003 I got a GBA and Ruby for my birthday. In 2004, my Christmas present was a GBA SP and FireRed.
