To start, which Johto starter? Since Silver seems to have a monopoly on Feraligatr, Gold's artwork seems to lean towards Typhlosion.
Any other ideas on the remainder of his team? Consider GSC gift and special mons like Red Gyarados, tyrogue from karate king, and an eevee from Bill.

He looks good with every Johto starter. Just make it the one strong against yours, or if in this theoretical game Silver also exists, make Silver's starter strong against yours and Gold's the same type as yours.

Alright so we've got some good contenders.

Hell yea now just to narrow down as close to 6 as possible, maybe one or two benched.
If there are canon teams established, I kinda wish they would make 3 teams per gen rather than going to Pokemon yellow/Mount Silver battle route.
That way each starter gets used as a starter, and there's room for fossils and all other gift pokemon to fit comfortably along with other interesting pokemon from that gen.

95% of fanmade material show that Gold picked cyndaquil. Also official works, there's Jimmy in the anime and Gold in pokéspe. Even the character designs themself seem to be similar, made for eachother.
