Cyndaquil isn't even better than Chikorita in its same trio, how could it be better than Piplup?
>>
>>26781988
The only thing worse than Chikorita is probably HA-less Snivy, and that's debatable. That's in ordinary games though.

Anyway, I just got Super. What am I in for? Is it as good as Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky? Are there any blatantly overpowered combinations, or can I pick whatever and beat the game without tearing my hair out fuck Machop and Cubone
>>
>>26782328
>What am I in for?
Pokemon Persona Mystery Dungeon: Tree of Xenogear X
>Is it as good as Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky?
You'll get varying opinions
>Are there any blatantly overpowered combinations
Yes
>>
>>26782328
>is it as good as Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky?
The general quality is definitely there, but you won't find a definitive ranking in terms of where it places among the other games.

>blatantly overpowered combinations
Chespin/Fennekin in general. Charizard/Torterra specifically for post-game. You can pick whatever honestly. Not to brag on an anonymous image board, but Super's difficulty is far overstated.

>Cubone
But it's amazing.
>>
>>26782328
Chespin is broken as fuck in Super and Totodile and Fennekin are honorable mentions
>>
>>26782390
>>26782415
Did they fix the awkward experience curves and stat distribution from the previous games?

I just chose Totodile and Treecko. The movesets are pretty neat, I wasn't expecting that.

>Cubone
>But it's amazing.
I could never get past the two non-damaging moves at the beginning.
>>
>>26782415
>picking charizard
>ever
>>
>>26782328
Super has some neat gameplay improvements, but the plot isn't as good as sky in my opinion, and there were some questionable design decisions, but it's a fun game while it lasts.
I've heard a Chespin and Fennekin combo can make the game really easy, and I used Riolu and Fennekin and had no trouble, beyond that I don't know.
Some people have said the game is harder than the previous ones, but I thought it was actually easier. I don't know if that's just because of the team I picked or everyone who says that the game is hard is just retarded and doesn't know how to use items.
>>
>>26782440
They "fixed" the level curve by making leveling super slow and stat gains minimal (or at least feel that way). Super was designed around the idea that items are more important than raw power, so levels were sort of devalued.

>I could never get past the two non-damaging moves at the beginning.
I just had my partner attack for me until I got a move.

>>26782453
I think it's because Charizard, while getting access to Heat Wave, also doesn't get hit by Earthquake so your partner can use it freely.
>>
>>26782440
probably not. When you level up, your stats only go up by one most of the time, and it feels like most enemies are a higher level than you and take forever to beat when going through the main story. You'll probably have to rely on items a lot.
They also nerfed the fuck out of the basic attack. It only does five damage now. All the time. It's completely useless.
>>
>>26782570
Yeah, I noticed that. But I never really relied on that anyway. It seems like I'm being thrown a lot of elixirs and tiny reviver seeds anyway. Orbs and those wands are pretty damn useful though now and they come up fairly often. I've been abusing them.

It does feel like my moves are a lot weaker in general though.
>>
>>26782597
The wands are really useful bordering on overpowered since they're stackable, especially pounce wands and stayaway wands.
If you find blasts seeds you should hoard those too. They do a shiton of damage so they can be really useful for bosses and shit when your moves don't have as much effect.

I wonder why they did that instead of taking it out altogether. If its gonna be so weak throughout, what's the point of having it in?
>>

For when you go SSJ (Awakened)
It sucks that it's locked to 5HP but when you're SSJ it does a shit-ton of damage and splash damage so you can save PP on your moves by spamming that

Been Mystery Dungeon 2 recently again. I remember when I bought it years ago that my starter was around Level 98 when I finished the game (not post-game, or maybe with? When I evolved them, they were this high at least, so yeah), just like my other guy. Is that normal? I know I haven't really done any or many sidequests. It was a pretty casual playthrough, so I don't know. Maybe it's normal, but struck me as weird that the level would get this high.

the last parts of main story are hard even with Skitty abuse.

you get to the point where regular mons can take three quartes of your health if they don't give you mercy by using a regular attack.

also, fuck sky tower summit.

>>
>>26785518
The last game that had Gummis and IQ were the WiiWare games.

WiiWare games seem to run on Sky engine, as I remember running up into a lookalike item.

>>
>>26786587

>>
>>26787524
Shouldn't you like have play time in the Adventure Log or somewhere on the main screen?
>>
>>26787600
yeah, but the savestat is 6 years or so old. I never deleted it. I played here and there afterwards as well, so it's ~88 hours now. Before that, it was around 60. But who knows when I played it last time and when I finished the post-game story.
>>
I find it kinda ironical the highest leveled Pokémon in Rescue Team is the same species as the first boss. L55 Skarmory, really?

The next is one rematch Articuno (L53). Then rematch Moltres (L52). Then we have some random mons that spawn at L50, and after that, some other mons that spawn at L45.
>>
>>26786488
>WiiWare games seem to run on Sky engine, as I remember running up into a lookalike item.
They definitely did reuse some stuff as items are like the same as Sky, but I doubt the engine itself is

>>
>>26788580
"Translating" menus and stuff wouldn't be too hard if you figure out the text format. Maybe I'll read about extracting and repacking .wads and hope that text editing is as easy as it is in the 3DS games.
>>
>>26788680
It's a WiiWare games.

Let's hope it is possible.

There's some stuff exclusive to WiiWare, though.
>>
Alright let's try and get some discussion going in this ded general.

How often and where do you bring Hoopa along with you in Super? Do you bring it to tougher dungeons and risk stuff killing it and evolving or do you bring it to easier dungeons to help you breeze through and save PP/Elixirs? Or do you even use it at all?
>>
>>26791773
I've never used Hoopa and probably never will. I do just fine on my own.
>>
>>26791773
The only legendary i have ever used in PMD is Sky's Jirachi.
>>
>>26791892

Really? Why didn't you use legendaries? A philosophical reason or did you just like other teammates better?
>>
>>26791916
There's only a couple of them i like. In PMD they are on the same level as everything else. In Super, there's only enough room for my 3 favorites on my team and nothing else.
>>
>>26791940

Fair enough, but didn't you ever get absolute mover in Sky? That's pretty godlike and it only shows up on Palkia.
>>
>>26791991
I got it on Palkia just to say i got it on Palkia. I'd much rather use my favorites instead, at least they got stuff like Trap Seer and don't take up half the screen
>>
>>26791773
I brought him with me if I was on the sand continent and remembered he exists.
Most of the times I brought him with me I forgot I had him and never actually used him though. I never really needed him.
>>
>>26791773
Hoopa's gimmick is pretty useless imo. I'd use him if he was an actual recruit and not an item.

Finally decided to get Gates when I saw a copy going for £20

Gameplay feels thin, but the story feels much better in the first half compared to Explorers's first half and Super's fist half.

I can see why the game's not very well liked so far, but it's not because of the story, that's for sure. How does the rest of the story compare to Explorers and Super?

There are some people that like Gates' story more than any other game
>>
>>26820878
Iffy. A lot of people feel like it tells more than shows. Other people get annoyed by the text speed, plus the fact that the writing is often roundabout and over-explain-y (there's a lot of "oh, look, X! It's X! I'd really like to go to X someday" or that sort of thing, where X is often repeated when it'd be easier to just say "there" or "that" or whatever).

Personally I just couldn't get invested in the characters. The partner's bland and the scene with Scraggy after the cave is phenomenally stupid, and none of the other characters were really likeable or interesting enough for me to care.
>>
>>26823164
>none of the other characters were really likeable or interesting enough for me to care.

Oddly enough, I had this problem with the other games. The only characters I really care about outside of Gates are the school kids in Super and the special episodes characters in Sky.

As for the partner, he's a bit vanilla compared to the super one, but much more likeable. I'd also say he's less bland than the Explorers partner and especially the Rescue Team one by having his goal to build paradise instead of being some kind of Explorer variant like every other one.

>>
I don't like that there's no room or reason to grind in SMD, I feel like I'm being rushed and I don't like feeling so underlevelled in story missions even though I have type advantages.
>>
>>26826846
I think it's a step in the right direction. I want the difficult of Super but dialed back just a little bit and item power severely reduced. I like not being bored to death in most dungeons.
>>
>>26819534
You actually didn't fuck up too hard with the donuts. They boost HP sometimes, unlike the other boosting items. In the long run, you'll have more HP than you would otherwise(although it'll take longer to get all your stats to 255).
That being said, it's around 2x more efficient(based on donut luck) to use vitamins, and it's also better because you can target specific stats.
The best way is to boost your relevant attack stat first, then speed, then defenses. This lets you OHKO everything and almost never miss.
>>
>>26827046
Alternatively, keep the item power but severely reduce the amount the player gets.
>>
>>26826846
>no room to grind, feel like I'm being rushed
This is a bit of an issue, but I understand why they did this.
>no reason to grind
I can't help but laugh at this. Picture this: Billy grinds up to the next team rank(which takes maybe an hour) and gets 30 gold bars. He spends them all on Calcium. Now he has 60 more special attack than everyone else. Do you see why this is a problem?
>underleveled
This is a huge issue in Super. Past the beginning part, it's very difficult to fight enemies on your own. You need to use items or your overpowered guest members to fight most of the enemies. I understand that there would be no strategy if you could just beat everyone through sheer force(like Skitty in Rescue Team), but I really don't like how I feel so insignificantly weak in Super. There needs to be a balance between moves and items.

>>
Let's fix PMD.

The main story normally plays like RT/Explorers. It's not hard. If you avoid grinding, it becomes more like Super, that you need to avoid enemies and use more items.

Both randomly generated missions and Connection Orb-like missions are kept, though the latter become more complex and aren't forced in a menu. They're kind of side quests. These are accessible during the main story, but they're optional. Some of them will be harder, having more restrictions, such as starting from level 1/5 and sometimes maybe more, like 30 for example (so that you get more interesting moves from the start and maybe get stronger enemies from the start). There may also be restrictions such as that you can only play that specific mission with a certain Pokémon, so that it gets build around it. They may also make you start with some specific items instead of none or what you already have..

Postgame story is structured like the main story at first. This part is not as short as GtI/Super, but not as long as Explorers either.
After this it becomes more like RT: main postagame story stuff happens after you do certain things and can happen whenever
Also taken from RT is that some dungeons will have something that makes them feel special. Think of Wish Cave. Multiple dungeons like that. most (if not all of them) having restrictions such as the side quest ones above, except the forced Pokémon species of course. These dungeons would also have some plot to them, be it related to the main plot or not. They would also feature a lot of exclusive and useful items that you'll find yourself using, which is what is going to make a specific dungeon feel special and different from one another. The only way to use an exclusive dungeon item in another dungeon is to complete the dungeon you can find it in (or using an Escape Orb I guess, but that would probably be harder to find there)

what do you think???
>>
>>26827232
I feel like I beat a dead horse when I say this (even though I haven't posted in these threads in a while), but I really do feel like Explorers got that down pat. It was still relatively easy, don't get me wrong, but I was actively using rocks and sticks to soften enemies up before going in for the KO, and that was during the early parts of my replay. Even in later dungeons in my main file I'm still regularly using silver spikes and petrify and spurn orbs, and the occasional seed. Plus oran berries if I run into an explosive trap. And apples, always apples.
>>
>>26829024
I don't know about the difficulty thing, I like this new difficulty even if it's just enemy health/damage being changed from the previous games.

Dungeons with gimmicks other than level reset would be very welcome. Same goes for those sidequest missions you mentioned in the paragraph before. More interesting twists, as long as they're not Aegis Cave, would definitely make the game feel less repetitive.
>>
>>26829234

There are few derps there and here, though. For one, you can't use Gummis on you or your partner outside of dungeons until post-game, which means no super stats for them before Rayquaza. Also, I forgot to insert the amount of Pokemon exclusive to Lv. 1 dungeons.

I really would like random missions to still be there, and Connection Orb for plot sidequests.

If Explorers is really set after Rescue Team, then why not have postgame on the other land? Who wouldn't want to meet YOOMTAH! Jigglypuff? Or maybe even Mom!Azumarill.

Sky is Time and Darkness, but better. It's like a director's cut. There's no exclusive items or Pokemon, they actually added more of these (plus some more extra dungeons; on top of making the Seven Treasures unlockable without codes).

Even Special Episodes to expand on some NPCs.

Literally the only reason to play TD is for the starters that got removed in Sky.

Blastoise is level 38.

The more I look at it, the more I feel like we need remade Rescue Team. It's not a bad game, but it definitely feels like it was their first time adapting Pokemon to these mechanics. They made some risky moves, and not all of them paid off. I mean, look at Dialga. It has IQ Skills, unlike the joke that is Mewtwo.

Imagine Mewtwo with 999 IQ, though. Intimidator, Extra Striker, Clutch Performer, Erratic Player, Nonsleeper, Brick-tough, Type-Advantage Master...

Who the fuck wants bag that stays at 20 items instead of expanding? Ranks that give nothing (other than changing what Jirachi can do)? Who the fuck wants "your party can contain only up to 3 members upon entering a dungeon, but you can neverthless recruit a fourth one". Remade version should use Explorers.
>not keeping Wands, Emeras, Megas as post-game stuff
Mega Fug could be the first to utilize Mega Evolution (because everyone wants him to destroy the meteor), and then maybe Mewtwo because he's basically "the strongest". Beating Mewtwo could initiate a sidequest chain that leads you to discovering how Mega Evolution works. Plain Ribbon could be used with Emeras to do something.

The chart would be related to quiz, but you would have a choice of four, instead of being like "here, have this Pokemon." You probably could also choose Pokemon yourself if you want, ala Super.

Just finished Rescue Team's main story.
I was blown away by the first half. I didn't expect anything too serious given the target demographic, so I was shocked when it came to the point where the friendly town turned turned on you. They avoided using the word 'kill' but they weren't even subtle about the fact that that's what would happen once they hunted you down. The whole situation felt so much more tense and serious than I was expecting, and I really felt for the protagonists when the partner had a small breakdown over what would become of two of you as you ran out of places to run.

Then the writers shat out the back half of the plot with some nonsense about a meteor causing natural disasters and having your character disappear for 10 seconds. And how about when all the rescue teams banded together to take on Magma Cavern, but then rushed off ahead of you only to no-show and leave you to take on Groudon yourselves.

Try to subtle mentally condition them towards being a better battler. Like when they are about to hit a pokemon that's asleep across the room, blow a mouthful of Flamethrower into their eyes. Or if you notice they've been going after an item at the other end of the room, blow a mouthful of Flamethrower into their eyes. If they do something good like 1shot an enemy, reward them by refraining from blowing Flamethrower into their face for a whole floor. Protip: You are going to want to fill your inventory with Max Elixers every morning so you don't have to keep running to the Deposit Box to grab bagfulls.

If the writers actually care about creating a consistent universe, then we can see from Gates and SMD that Pokemon's emotions and feelings manifest in reality in extreme ways. We see Bittercold and Dark Matter as physically realized masses of negative emotion that evidently build up over time. Likewise, we see the Voice of Life as some sort of manifestation of Pokemon will to live (?) or at least something that seems to be at the opposite end of the spectrum of Bittercold/Dark Matter. If this is the case, then we could expect to see a Dark Souls-esque cycle of negative feelings congregating into a threat to existence before being dealt with repeating through the series. Of course, nobody actually wants that because it would be boring and even more repetitive in an already formulaic series.
>>
>>26859939
Oh I didn't mean anything like that, I just meant that their existence would be acknowledged and we'd learn that it's something that's always been there and will continue to exist until a permanent solution is found. I was thinking more like a Kingdom Hearts-esque revelation where it turns out all the bad things came from one source (like something is allowing/forcing the feelings to manifest, it's not natural) so now the heroes have to beat the big BIG bad so nothing like it happens again. We'd have like a mini trilogy within the series.

the more I look at that first image, the weirder the shading around funneldoggo's mouth looks

I feel really bad for the Gates partner He successfully kick started a town to help make sure the Bittercold never comes back, only to later find that another negativity entity comes along that doesn't even need everyone to be miserable assholes to exist.

>>26862012
Well they didn't know about the Bittercold at first though, they would have done it regardless

So what was up with Hydreigon lying about the memories associated with the main character disappearing, and that a human remaining in the Pokémon world would throw the universe out of balance? The former was never a thing before Gates (even in the game where the main character is actually erased from the timeline), and the latter was deconfirmed by Cresselia while also just sort of being allowed to happen in Rescue Team. Really the only thing that doesn't sit right with me about Gates' story.

>a human remaining in the Pokémon world would throw the universe out of balance

Maybe it was just another case of correlation, not causation
>>
>>26862432
Maybe Hydreigon does it in a particular way that does make memories disappear

Either the different nature of the transformation played a role: being changed by the powers that be or a messed up time portal could be different than being summoned by the Voice of Life, or the way the characters returned got them excepted from the rule somehow. But more realistically, the writers probably just couldn't be consistent to save their lives and do their very best to ass-pull a sad ending every time.
>>
>>26862900
I don't think they even expected a consistent, all settings at the same time world.

But that's the fun of myths and legends. I wonder if they will go with an all continents world next time. Or maybe somewhere else entirely.

Who? I think I remember some folks discussing making a fangame like a month or two ago, but I don't remember anyone saying they were actually doing anything.

This shit still gets me to this day.

Does sky just have the same story as time/duckness?
>>
>>26863501

Yeah. It's like other Pokemon 3rd versions.
>>
>>26863501
Yeah, but there's some more bits here and there and 5 special episodes that expands side characters plots.

>"but don't worry everything's okay nobody died"
>everything bad that ever happened was caused by Darkrai and nothing else, and he just came out of nowhere near the end of the whole story
Most of the plot's alright, but I can't help but feel like these were major asspulls
