Do you ever complete an in-game story run with a NFE Pokemon? By which I mean, you chose to keep it NFE, not you ran out of time or you couldn't get someone to trade with you?
I did with a level 100 Phanpy once because it's cute and tough for an NFE plus Pickup is real useful at that level.
If it takes an item to evolve (stone or other), I typically won't evolve it because sometimes those things can be hard to come by until much later on.
I once used Larvitar through a game of X where I used one mon from each gen, because by the time it would have evolved into pupitar I liked him better as a Larvitar and it evened out his leveling with everyone else
