Close your eyes. Think about your fondest memories and feelings of Pokemon. When you hear the word "Pokemon", what gen comes to mind?

Which is it, and why?

Pic related will always be "THE" Pokemon game for me.

I honestly don't know. Probably gen 3. I was old enough to appreciate the games at that age. And honestly I very much enjoyed Colisseum and Gale of Darkness.

But playing through Plat I'm having all these nostalgia rushes from when I played competitive all the way through gen 4.

>Be lonely outcast kid b/c constant bullying for no reason
>have Pearl
>Infernape and Luxray are two of my best friends
>replay the games constantly
>learn all the Pokemon
>get Emerald
>encounter an Absol
>freak out with glee because I didn't know about it
>catch it
>name it Vanessa
and then I broke my DS Lite, so I can never transfer the original one off of my Emerald cartridge.

So Pearl and Emerald. Platinum too since I got the Japanese version for Christmas one year.

My aunt loaned me my cousin's copy of Ruby when I was 9 and it was the first time I had played a Pokémon game since R/B/Y. I played the shit out of that game and I fell in love with the series all over again.

When my cousin took the game back and deleted my save file I bought Crystal, Yellow, and FireRed to satiate my need to play Pokémon until Emerald came out. I constantly watched Emerald trailer videos and fantasized about receiving another Blaziken until I got the game as a present on Christmas. I cried.

To this day Emerald is my favorite game of all time and I've replayed it at least 4 times on different emulators. The adventure, the music, the atmosphere, and the bond with my Pokémon felt more legitimate than any other game I've played in the series. Pokémon Emerald opened up opportunities for friendship, communities, and other hobbies (like art, which is now my career). It sounds over the top but I genuinely consider Pokémon to be a very large and important part of my life and I absolutely love it!

Black and White.

My house was broken into shortly after Diamond and Pearl came out. They took all of my Pokémon games from R/B/Y to D/P plus other games and systems as well.

I had to restart with Pearl and Platinum and, in an attempt to regain what I had lost, I turned to Action Replay and abused the absolute shit out of it until Pokémon wasn't all that fun anymore. I continued doing that through HG/SS, but once B/W came out, I was unable to update my Action Replay to include them, so I decided to play without cheats. Playing through the games as I once had was a breath of fresh air and reestablished my love for Pokémon. I threw my AR in the trash and after I beat both Black and White, I erased my Platinum, HG, and SS save files and played through them fairly. It felt like I was playing them for the first time and reminded me how much I had loved G/S/C.

>tfw pokemon has always been something i used to cope with and ignore shitty points in my life.
the best memories i have are with crystal, which was the first game i truly finished, and actually felt proud of, and allowed myself to get immersed in, imagining a pokemon world around me.

then ruby, which was the first big thing i ever bought with my own money, after winning it in a halloween costume contest, with a costume i made all by myself.

then black and white, which got me back into pokemon after a huge depression after finishing high school, ignoring everything around me, including things i was really interested in. it got me excited again, made me love pokemon. it was like a whole new start, like playing the games for the first time, seeing new pokemon leaked, learning about new features and characters. i pre ordered it, went to the mall events, had the bonus lithographs from target up on my wall. its still my favorite generation, and probably always will be.

It's 1998. I've just restarted my blue version for the nth time and I'm still stuck in Viridian Forest. I am 6. I am wondering through the woods, destroying mon after mon with my Bulbasaur. The frustration of not understanding the game has left and been replaced by something better: a feeling of mastery. That I'm good at this. I may have just been button mashing for an hour straight, but I've finally got the right buttons. I know tackle does the most damage to caterpie. I know that leech seed restores my health. I know to never use growl because it's useless. Then, it happened. Bulbasaur was evolving. The first pokemon I'd evolved, I was so excited. I finally had an ivysaur, and I wasn't going to waste him in this forest. I tried everything. I started at the beginning of the forest and ran into every wall, pressed A on every square, kept going and going until I was ready to give up. I'd found the secret potion and antidote, which were neat surprises, but I still wasn't out, and I only had the end of the forest left to try. With a sigh, I pushed forward to the dead end of the maze, and waited to hear the thump of me hitting a wall. But I didn't. I was through, in a building. I'd made it. I yelled so loud my grandmother came to check on me. Exploration, finding new things, constructing the story of me and my ivysaur taking on the world. That's the moment I fell in love with these games, and I've never looked back.

Tl:dr- I got lost in Viridian Forest in Blue and spent two hours getting a level 20 ivysaur
>>
Honestly, gen 2. Particularly Crystal/HG/SS. I know it gets a lot of hate (gen 2, not HG SS), but I loved most of the mons and the story. Also has the most memorable songs for me for some reason. I loved the puzzles for the Unown Ruins, the radio and how the radio reacted in certain places, the first time we had moving Pokemon sprites in battle, DAT BASED POST GAME. The phone got kinda annoying because of fuckin Joey and his damn shorts but it wouldn't feel right without him now. And I love Suicune, Raikou, and Entei. Travelling legendaries was a great challenge to add to the games. Also the night and day element and headbutting trees to get some Pokemon, DAT BASED TEAMING UP WITH LANCE TO DESTROY TEAM ROCKET, dat asshole rival....

If they ever released Gold, Silver, and Crystal for the 3ds like they did for the gen 1 games, I'd buy Crystal in a heartbeat.

Crystal. Gen two is my favorite since I didn't really get to play the gen one games. I only ever had a Gameboy Color and Yellow, so I remember playing Gold/Silver/Crystal much more. I remember I was excited to play the new female character, but I didn't know which game she was in, so it was the only time I ended up buying all versions.

I think around the second or third time I played through it, the Odd Egg hatched into a shiny Igglybuff. That was the first time I had seen a shiny Pokemon (I didn't know that the red Gyarados counted as shiny) and I lost my shit. I traded it to Silver to keep it safe and still have it today.

Being a shitty kid getting my ass kicked by Red because I had barely touched video games at that point, but being mystified by what seemed like a great challenge.
Finding friends in elementary school with Gold, connecting with other people who are walking the same road as me, discovering the most obvious things and being awed when returning to Kanto and feeling like this was the least linear gameplay ever.
Growing up and developing the attention span to devote entire summer days to Ruby, being too scared to go diving when my friends weren't around while simultaneously starting to realize there's techniques and things to do past playing the game until the credits roll. Strategy guides and fair battles.
Using the games as my only escape when family and friends failed me, staying up late at night alone in the house with nothing but the hum of my IBM and the bgm of Pearl to listen to.
Having a real summer job and marking the beginning of me buying my own games/systems with Soul Silver, when I should have started feeling silly for still playing pokemon I just felt proud that I was functional enough to support my habit myself.
Moving away just months after getting Black, leaving my country behind for better opportunities. First started IV breeding, developing attachments with my pokemon that feel like they go beyond the games; some pokemon in particular I've had since ruby. Getting into playing competent battles and getting reattached with family and friends through them, I feel like I didn't know my brother until I started battling competitively with him.
Being casually obsessed with pokemon, staying functional while building bonds with my pokemon and my friends alike while playing a blind nuzlocke of White 2.
Getting over my social awkwardness and being able to call pokemon a hobby, completing the pokedex for the first time in Y and Omega Ruby and feeling accomplished as fuck, using it to cope through a stressful engineering degree.
Every gen had something.

Same.

I think of Pokemon Gold.
When I do I hear the original Goldenrod and Ecruteak themes.

Gold is my first video game I owned. We ahd other video games on a PS1(Spyro, Crash, Tomb Raider) at the time but those were all hared amongst everyone in the house. And at the time I lived in the middle of nowwhere so the wasn't much to do.

Pokemon Gold was mine and mine alone.

Played blue and yellow before gen2 but I didn't fall in love with Pokemon until playing through Silver. The gen 2 games had more atmosphere and felt more like a complete universe. Gen 1 is great, because it started it all, but when I play those games it feels weirdly empty.

On my actual 10th birthday, my mom picked me up early from school and surprised me with Pokemon Crystal, which came out like 2 weeks before.

Pokemon Ruby, which is my first Pokemon game.
As for the fondest memories relating to that:

I got my Ruby game used. One of the higher-leveled Pokemon I have was a Linoone. Since I'm the type to play RPG using the strongest anything I have, I obviously ended up using only Linoone (though at times, I change him with Swampert).
How well did I do?

I beat. The fucking. Champion. Using a fucking Linoone. Against the fucking Metagross. Sure I used a bunch of items, but still.

It's only after I really got into Pokemon that I realized how stupid that was, and how using Swampert would have make things easier and less... rage-inducing.

Pokemon Blue comes to mind.. I practically learned how to read from playing the damn game. One of my earliest memories regarding pokemon was getting lost in Mt Moon and having someone get surf from the safari zone for me cause I didn't know what to do lol. Silver/Crystal would always be memorable as well, but Blue was the first game I beat.

HG/SS were great as well, and honestly the only reason I prefer G/S is pure nostalgia, because obviously the remakes are better games. But it just felt great as a kid to explore this region, so this is what Pokémon is for me.

HGSS and BW2 are my favorite games, but damn if there wasn't something special about Crystal version. I have a lot of memories with other games too, but these stick out the most. Funnily enough, the most fun with a Pokemon game I've had recently was with X/Y, since coming across rare Pokemon felt like such a treat thanks to there being so many different ones.

Generation 5. I value story and characters more than anything else, so this will always be THE Pokémon games for me. Unova is also a fucking dank region, and it holds two of my very most favourite Pokémon ever. The music is also GOAT! I'm so fucking glad they decided BW where the ones to get sequels rather than any other pair of games, it was definitely the best choice they could have made. I can't fucking wait until we get Gen 5 remakes by ~2030, with all the new features and stories and the much better graphics it's gonna be their best games to date (for me).

Warning, blog-tier post.

I have 3 fondest memories with three different gen. But the fondest probably is with Ruby.

I always played pokemon with my cousin, which I consider as my Big brother more than a cousin. I always got the "Red" version and he got the "Blue" one.
I remember during RSE era, we would have this play guide about how to figure out the Regi puzzles and I remember us letting our GBA SP plugged and turned on waiting in the Regice room for hours while my mother made the dinner.
It's a shitty memory but for some reason it's a really nostalgic one.

When it comes to Gen 1, I remember being afraid of saving my game because the text in my language says "do you want to "stomp" on the save" so I thought it would kill everyone. So i didn't save at first and always was stuck in Viridian forest. My cousin made the forest for me and told me about saving.
I remember my 1st level 100, Blastoise and my bros I had thanks to the surfing glitch; Golbat and Golduck.

My last memory is doing a sleepless night catching Palkia with a friend of mine who caught Dialga at the same time. We were so happy and so tired at the same time. This night was really fun. It's a really sad memory for me because this friend later moved out to America and I missed (and still miss) him a lot.
