To be honest I thought the art was pretty good and the designs well executed but the only one I thought was REALLY inspired was Huntshoot, if only because he pulled something out of his ass for that one whereas Pinnister was kind of a clear direction for a clown seal, though again it was executed in a creative way with the strongman leotard integrated into its design and I personally like the image of a sea lion standing up on its fins even if it doesn't make a lot of sense. I liked it more before he posted more angles and art. The "hair" being a big tip attached to a hat shaped growth folded backwards was kind of awkward.

Delphox is a great example of a starter that doesn't physically change much but still develops a distinctive concept over time. Most starters nowadays really. Samurott is an extreme, and its extreme lies mostly in its appearance.

Most of the best designs are animals, plants or minerals that just get bigger or follow it's natural cycle. While the worst one are always more often than not the ones that mix retarded unrelated concepts together, like moai-mario, pokeball mushroom, ganguro-nigger-youkai or obese baby chameleon. If anything it'll be the "imaginative inspired" circus theme that will doom the starters too look like shit, just like what happend with gen 5 and 6.

Says who? You? I for one greatly appreciate designs that follow the "natural cycle" whilst developing other disistinctive traits. It makes the ideas unique. Nobody is talking about robot pirate ninjas. But there's nothing wrong with an owl developing some stereotypical assassin or archer like traits to seperate itself from current and future owl designs. That's not only creative (at least moreso than "its a bigger owl") but smart. And it takes inspiration. Someone sees Rowlet's pookedex and goes " OK... It's silently stalking and shooting it's leaves... That's like a sniper or an assassin!". Thats inspiration. It takes none of that to make a bigger owl. I can appreciate how having a fox sort of play around with the idea of fox fire and eating twigs and sort of mesh that with the idea of a witch or wizard wand with the fox fire at the tip. It's brilliant. I can admit Greninja isn't the most creative design but it still stands out among the other frog Pokemon and they still incorporated the unique tongue scarf idea to make it distinctive from even other ninja frogs in media.
