Could work. That "end the cycle" bullshit is awful though, especially if their power scales roughly with yours. Why wouldn't they just immediately destroy you with their most poweful Pokemon?
If the story has an appropriate enough amount of time shenanigans you could explain it better as attempts to push the protagonist to get better. Perhaps in their timeline they failed in their quest to save the world, so they keep pushing you and pushing you, making sure that you're better than they ever were, so you can succeed.
