How much grinding do you people do to see shinies? Played through most of the games since Yellow came out and never seen a shiny.

I got all my shinies randomly as wild encounters in Gold, and I played that game for hundreds of hours. I caught a shiny Golbat, Primeape, Swinub, Tangela, the obligatory Gyarados and a Graveler IIRC.
Then for the remaining gens I found nothing until I restarted Platinum a while ago. I found a Shiny Starly in the very first route, just after getting my first balls.
That's a thousand or more hours of total gameplay for 6 shinies, but I never cared too much about them. Never did the Masuda method or shit like that.
