You always win though. You just have to play often enough. If you play 100 credits you are likely to lose but once you play with 500 or 1000 credits you go down a bit but you make it up because the jackpot is huge. It just takes time to grind.

Same. The first time I encountered Voltorb Flip in soulsilver, my progress came to a screeching halt for about 10 hour of gameplay while I grinded coins to get a Flamethrower TM for Quilava, Thunderbolt TM for Flaffy, and a Swords Dance TM for Sandshrew. Made an already easy game easier but I don't regret a minute of it.
