The thing I really liked about Sun and Moon from E3 are 3d trainers which look like they were drawn. This is really cool for me.

Actually, I'm confused about this decision. We still see a model for the trainer in battle, doing all sorts of poses, even one for when they're defeated. Why didn't they just have the model do something for this? They did it for the rival.

That is the model, they make a pose then that background shows up then they throw their pokeball.
The only animation it looks like they dont have is withdrawing their pokemon. Though at least there's a line thing showing they're withdrawing it rather than the pokemon shrinking into the ground or just turning back into a pokeball
Are you sure, because it looks like a jumpy 2D animation to me. In battle and defeat pose are the model.

It's the model. Pretty sure they made them do this because it reflects back to the Trainer Sprites/Artwork from past gens.
And the Rival is an important character, so he's not really something to compare this to.

There's a short animation where she moves into this pose which is held for a few seconds.
Then, it jumps to a new screen where she throws the ball.
