The anime is super non canon to the games, which are the mainline canon for pokemon, it's important to remember. And one of the biggest reasons why is that some of the early anime featured real ass animals.
As we slowly but surely approach the time when the anime might be becoming canon, I can only hope that the rules for it's bullshit become more distinct and solid. Because pokemon never said their names in the games until XY. People might pull out the Indian Elephant shit, but it's easily waived because we never actually see them, there's just mention in a single dex entry.
