To follow, the government brought them in to control the rat problem, but rats are nocturnal and mongoose are diurnal, so they just went after birds and bird eggs since they were easier.
They don't really have any predators and Hawaii has no snakes. As for how common they are, think of them as the Hawaiian version of squirrels on the mainland.
