I think gen 7 removed gates. Looking at the map I see nothing to suggest conventional gates like we sawin past gens. Maybe they are going to make like the remake of Hoenn and have invisible boarders at the very least.
That never stopped them in ORAS
The islands are gates in of themselves, since you will likely need a vehicle of some sort to get to one another.
Just as long as they don't have the pointless transition sounds this time.
