Because it used to be neat to have a pokemon that could only be obtained through breeding a legendary pokemon (what?!) that could only be hatched from an egg (preposterous!) that you had to get by completing another game.

What new gimmick do you think they should do?
I'd like to see two Pokemon that share an evolution. It's nothing that's ever been done, but there's actually no problem with it besides deciding what hatches from its eggs.
That can depend either on gender or hatch location.

Maybe that offspring can be caught by itself and functions as a regular Pokemon in the game.
