Dig battles. Absolutely.
You get a set number of turns that one trainer must win the battle by. If neither trainer wins in the allotted turns the underground area that serves as a battle arena caves in.

I'd rather have triple typed pokemon, as it would allow for a more robust system in some cases where X pokemon has two types but looks like it would benefit with a 3rd.

Dig Battles, fuck yes.
Bring back the Underground, but make it more elaborate and practically a second region full of different underground caves and shit. You alternate between traveling the main region and the underground, and all underground battles are dig battles.
