As someone who hasn't played since pokemon diamond and plans on buying a 2ds for moon , what do I need to know ?

Not that much. The game will teach everything you need to know. If you want, buy your 2DS and play X/Y or ORAS now, but not because you need to, but just for fun.

Dont buy 2DS; that model is outdated. You will want 3DS XL, or a New Nintendo 3DS XL.
