Fossil/Jungle/Team Rocket were unfun as shit to open because 2/3rds of the time you got a shitty non foil card that should be a foil but isn't because WotC was a gaggle of faggots.

Base Set and Gym Challenge were the best. I'd include Gym Heroes too but FUCK WOTC yet again.
>>
>>26714211
Jungle was really nice.
>>
>tfw you collected cards for the pictures and never learned how to play the TCG
>>
>>26714211
Pulling a base set charizard and then later on pulling a first edition base set charizard was the most exciting shit in the world at the time.

Of course, I ended up trading the first ed charizard for a blastoise since I was obsessed with getting all of the starters + evos at the time, bit of a shame in retrospect but that's what I get for being a stupid kid.

You do know that they still make the cards right? And now they aren't just "copy and paste the mon's official artwork on a random background".

Yeah they copypaste the effects now instead so you're still playing LITERALLY THE SAME DECK now AFTER rotation.

He's talking about Sugimori's official artworks being copypasted onto random backgrounds for tons of the early cards.

Was especially bad in the first three sets, as well as the Gym sets. Also Neo Genesis.

>>
>>26714693

>>
>>26714713
You level up the regular version of the card into it. So for Stage 2 pokemon like Infernape, it's basically like a fourth stage. They keep the attacks of the previous stage, so it's kinda cool.

But the icing on the shit sundae that ruins the whole thing is that Infernape and Infernape Lv X both count towards the 4 Infernape you can have in your deck.

Sarcasm
>>
>>26714860
It's not really a problem in pokemon since you can't use cards anymore older than a certain set, almost all of the best cards right now are like 3 years old
>>
>>26714896
Then there's no excuse or purpose for the ridiculous Power Inflation that's been going on since Gen 4.
>>
>>26714910
If everything gets inflated at the same time then the balance level still stays the same though

>>
>>26714935
If the level is staying the same then why inflate it at all?
>>
>>26714935
You're missing my point. There's literally no point to make the numbers bigger. If everything inflates and everything is the same, it's the same as if not inflating the power levels at all. It's redundant and retarded and only there for kids who like M-MUH BIG NUMBERS

It's the same shit that happened to YuGiOh. The numbers just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger, but it doesn't really add any value to the gameplay.
>>
>>26714994
It's not really the same thing that happened in Yugioh though, early Yugioh was boring as shit because it was just "put basic beatstick down then sacrifice for bigger basic beatstick" now it has more strategies to win at least.

Pokemon tcg is still the same simple game it was 15 years ago with bigger numbers

Yugioh's numbers aren't anywhere near as inflated as Pokemon's if were just counting numbers. I mean, Summoned Skull was the relevant big numbers card, and 14 years later the biggest we have at the same cost is this. And BEWD is still the best for two tributes.

Yugioh's power creep is based on the amount of words that are on the card, and the numbers have fuck all to do with it.

>>
>>26715388
Don't know why people assume this matters, old unplayable cards are hardly worth shit unless there's huge nostalgiafaggotry for MUH 1ST EDITION CHAWIZAD, look up things like 1st Gyarados or Machamp and compare them to any full art card from the most recent set.
>>
>>26716439
theyre bought for collection value. almost any card before the power creep of gen 4 is unplayable. and machamp is a bad example for a card because of its misprint.
Stop being a twat and let people use their disposable income however they want.

>>26716505
Neo Discovery was complete garbage, fuck you.
>>
>>26716476
The trainers are easily the best trainers ever made, but the Pokemon are mostly ass because after they were rotated out monsters got bigger numbers. Ultimately though, everything was scaled up accordingly and old sets are rotated out so it doesn't matter. If there was a vintage format for Pokemon like there is in MtG it would be all current monster cards and all old trainers
>>
>>26716523
I'm sorry (you) feel that way
>>
>>26714220
>>26714211
Rocket set was the best to open since you had "dark" pokemon and this was really cool when you were 12. Also all artwork was original no more stock art from the games.

Worst set to open from was Base Set 2 since the holos were uglier and it had no new cards and I had already opened so many Base Set and Jungle boosters I didn't want more of them. Gym 1 is a close second with having fucking rare Goldeens and Tentacools.
>>
>>26714257
Thank fuck
>>
>>26714649
Actually stock art is still used every new gen for the new Pokemon. It's sort of a requirement before you get awesome artwork.
>>
>>26716523
I'm legitimately curious why you feel this way. In terms of nostalgia I remember Neo having such a mystical draw to me, what with the box art centering around ancient things and a sense of discovery scraping against the unknowable. That being said, I don't have a single satisfying memory of opening a pack, everything I ever pulled was garbage, so I'm wondering if despite the cool, sleek "neo" theme the sets were actually bullshit?
>>
>>26716953
95% of the cards from Gym 1 to Neo Destiny were absolute garbage because they were afraid to make cards as broken as Hitmonchan and Electabuzz again.

It wasn't until the e-Card sets that Media Factory started taking risks again.
>>
>>26714954
Bigger numbers allows more variety in numbers. If 30 damage and 70 HP is average, for example, there's a HUGE difference between 30 and 40 damage. Any weaker Pokemon is stuck doing 10-30 damage. If the averages were 50 damage and 120 HP, bumping damage to 60 does the same thing, except you now have five "can't 2HKO an average Pokemon" numbers to hand out to weaker Pokemon instead of three.
>>
>>26716981

Remember how the EX Pokemon in R/S were meant to be as strong as the original Pokemon but gave two prizes instead of one?

Those EX were considered crappy as newer sets were released and the power of the EXs kept increasing and now we have tons of cards that do crazy damage and basically makes any older Pokemon useless against newer Pokemon.
>>
>>26716981
The e-card sets were a soft reboot and the vast majority of them were shit because they were trying to tone down the power creep. RS is when they just went "fuck it" and changed the power scale.
>>
>>26714220
Base and Rocket boosters
>>
>>26715492
I envy you so much right now.
>>
>>26717169
>he thinks numbers are fun
There's a reason Yu Gi Oh has maintained its attack and defense numbers for as long as it has. The Power Inflation should come from actual effects, conditions, TEXT. Not fucking numeros.
>>
>>26714303

>All those holo cards reprinted as rare just to fluff the card counts of the set

Fucking terrible
>>
>>26718837
You know the Pokemon TCG does both right?
And that number inflation literally does nothing but trick little kids.
