That's a nice thought. Plasma discussed specifically as causing trouble in Unova a few years ago = It fucking happened. Stop grasping at straws to try and validate your incorrect opinion by claiming that a direct reference is simply "a tribute to fans". Link in the inn in Mario RPG was a tribute to fans. An NPC specifically talking about the events of a previous game is both a moment of fan service and confirmation that the subject of the statement was canon.
