Dunsparce was usually considered to be a rare encounter right? Makes sense to use it for the QR code function.
I think Dunsparce is gamefreak's forced meme Pokemon that they never managed to make popular in that way
its nice knowing they haven't completely forgotten about it

The first time I've played Pokémon Soul Silver, I got Rock Smash and decided to go in that Dark Cave for a Dunsparce with Serene Grace for my friend. So I used Rock Smash on one of that rock and found a Shiny Pink Female Dunsparce... but with Run Away and a poor nature. Just lucky it was my first encounter with Rock Smash!

Dunsparce's claim to fame was in the Pokemon TCG from 2004-2006. Every competitive deck in the format used it since you could fill your bench with any basic Pokemon you wanted so everyone played 4 of him in a deck to get him in the first 7 cards and fill their bench with their main hitters. Sadly after the card getting rotated out we've never had another good TCG dundsparce but the legend still lives.

Personally, I think it's because they feel bad for Dunsparce being so plain, so they promote it so "hey, remember this Pokemon actually exists." Though I want other Mega Pokemon more, I still hope Dunsparce gets some Mega love soon.

Dunsparce is based on the Tsuchinoko. It's rare in every generation and is basically only there to teach you that sometimes the rarest things aren't always the best. It's a life lesson in the form of a Pokémon.
I sincerely hope that it doesn't get any sort of powerup ever, since it's one of the most fun Pokémon to use on showdown precisely because people underestimate it.
