I wasn't one to complain too much about the whole battle circle thing, but man they really do look way better without them.
Neutral colors in the background, brown, make the pokemon stand out more.
It's a subtle design trick. When the background is (somewhat) plain or bland it draws the eyes right to the focus--which in these cases is the pokemon. The positioning is no mistake either.
