Man I thought we finally got over this meme.
The last two times generations got sequels, at least Gen1 got a third version, showing that yes that was the best Game Freak could do with Kanto alone at the time and they actually needed Johto, and Gen5 had the decency to keep its sequel in its own generation, showing that Game Freak had faith in Unova as a region where more than just the first half of the story can be told. The only thing I can think here is that even GF knows they took a big steaming dump all over the nice carpet with X and Y, and are perhaps misguidedly trying to finish their thoughts while distancing themselves from that mistake.
Charizard got a new form last gen. Guess that means gen 6 was actually gen 1...
just because zygarde's forms are in sun and moon doesn't make them gen 6 games. Why are you people so hell bent on them being gen 6? It's a new region, it has new starters, and new pokemon.

Johto was the first attempt at a new generation they had. I think some early installment weirdness can suffice as a reasonable explanation for much of its oddities or shortcomings
Those games wouldn't have been finished had Iwata not saved the day, and when he crammed all of Johto down to being able to fit in Kanto that just means Game Freak couldn't plan out or design the region properly

Gamefreak deliberately used high poly models with the specific intent of up-porting them unchanged to future games. Hell they already did that for the transition from Pokemon Stadium to Colosseum.

Those changes are too insignificant to call it a new generation. There's been mid-generation discrepancies before, like DP changing hypnosis' accuracy to 70 but Platinum immediately changing it back to 60.
Ultimately whether SM is gen VI or VII comes down solely to its ability to directly interact with ORAS and XY, the same way RSE+FRLG or DPPt+HGSS did.

Gen 6 already pushed the limits of the 3DS, so it makes sense that Gen 7 isn't that different visually.
They've crammed 700+ models that are of a higher quality than the ones used in Wii games, into a handheld that's roughly par with the Gamecube in terms of power.
