Odd generations introduced more pokemon than even ones, but with the amount of 72 in gen VI, I'd say that in SM there will be ~100 new mons. Maybe I'm wrong and there will be more. Who the fuck knows.

Well, the total of new pokemon designs that had to be made in gen 6 is a bit higher. After all, mega evolutions needed their attention too. There were 29 in XY, so that makes 101 new designs. Unfortunately, I suspect this might mean we get 30 new pokemon less in gen 7. 120 is my optimistic guess.

In order to get these numbers, I added each gen's new native Pokemon, new cross-gen babies and evos, and new formes. In terms of formes, I didn't include any that were aesthetic only (including gender differences). I included both permanent formes and formes that only exist within a battle (Darmanitan, Castform, mega evolutions, etc). The only gender differences that were included were for Combee and Meowstic because they're not purely aesthetic. You can infer from this information what you want.

I was providing a comprehensive list of the numbers of all new Pokemon, new formes, and cross-gen babies and evolutions for each gen. Those numbers can't be easily found anywhere. Pokemon is always the top selling game on Nintendo handhelds. XY weren't bad, but they weren't good either, having the Pokemon branding automatically made them best sellers.
Also, the games are all about collecting Pokemon, so having a bigger variety is always better. I feel like having around 100 or maybe 100+ Pokemon with every new generation helps give the gen its very own feel, which is something gen 6 failed to deliver on.

Pokemon is at 720 with Volcanion being #721 as the final Kalos Pokemon. I'm expecting maybe 129+ since it'll average out to 850+ Pokemon. GF had all 2015 and 2016 to work on this so let's hope for the best.
