Not only can you pet and feed one of your pokemon but there is a kennel of sorts for all 6 or less of the pokemon travelling with you. The pokemon can interact and play together. Interactivity is something the team have worked on improving this generation to go with the friendly and warm vibe of he region.

It is actually the badges that go in there. It was decided that instead of changing shape, the individual badges for each gym will from now on be differentiated using colours and little objects that you can see through the crystal. That's why there is shading on the crystal - it's an object representing its gym.
If you put a badge into the horizontal slot, it gives your pokemon certain abilities.

I can't entirely remember how many different evolution lines there are. But at least one of them has many different formes, yes. There is one forme for the sandy area, one for the oasis, one for the canyon and another one for each island's beach. I think that's it.
